Today began with a great breakfast at our hotel, then a short
walk to the train station. Happily, no rain! Last night was stormy; heavy rain,
thunder and lightning. We anticipated rain given our northerly latitude, so
we’re prepared. The electrical storm was a surprise though.
We’re now on a
high-speed ICE train (Inter-City Express) to Flensburg, Germany, where we will
pick up our rental car. It was critical we not miss our train, as being
Saturday, the AVIS agency is only open until noon. If for any reason we DO get
delayed (ie train problems), a contingency plan is in place; all part of our
planning process.
From the Flensburg
train station we have to walk to AVIS, about a mile and a half dragging our
luggage. This explains why we pack light; we need to be mobile and fleet
footed. Taking a cab is an option reserved for rain.
Our plan is to drive about one hour from Flensburg to Husum,
the first of the Abraham family towns in the western Schlesswig-Holstein region
near the North Sea. We expect to have a room waiting in Husum at the small,
family run Hotel Jever-Stube. However, our reservation was made via email
utilizing Google translator, so anything could happen. We did confirm a second
time just before leaving home, so let’s hope we got it right! Worse case… we
sleep in the car…just slightly cramped.
We had hoped to make contact with relatives in the region.
Several letters were mailed to persons with the Abraham or Carsten name,
explaining our visit and desire to meet possible relatives and learn more about
my ancestral history. However, we received no responses. So we’ll just take our
chances, go forward on the information we do have, and with a bit of luck and
sleuthing, learn more. Who knows; we might even find a living relative here
yet!
That’s it for now…more will follow when we’ve completed the
family towns. Should be interesting.
